Churches (5/38)

The idea behind this picture is fairly simple and obvious. The church to the left is mirrored by the shopping center at Les Halles to the left - a “cathedral of commerce.” It’s also about the glaring incongruities of the architecture in this neighborhood, and therefore part of my broader effort to try and “Pictue Paris” in my photographs. Like in “The View From the Ledge,” I use the fence to narrativize the photograph. Focusing on a foreground object like that gives the viewer the feeling of being “in” the frame, looking out at the view, instead of looking “into” the view from outside the photograph.
