I didn’t make many portraits because I was worried I didn’t have the skill to communicate moods with anything as malleable or visually complex as a human face. In this picture, however, I think I did a fairly good job communicating Reti’s “pensive” look. The mirror of his head in the monkey’s head behind him on the table is a bit of a self-conscious joke on his part that I wanted to share. The grounding of the shot on the flocked surface in the foreground was originally something I wanted to cut, but I ultimately decided that I rather enjoyed the tactile contrast it lends to the image.
